An App to Help You Get Outside This Autumn/Winter

We all know how difficult it can be to find the motivation to get outside when the weather is horrible. I know that it is so tempting for me to stay inside curled up with a good book and a blanket. However, I still love going for walks and it’s important to get out there in the fresh air for your mental health. This app will help with that.

Geocaching is an app that you can download from Apple’s App Store and the Play Store. It’s a free app to download and make an account. This opens you up to “the world’s largest treasure hunt.”

People from around the world hide objects within nature for others to find. These are small and unobtrusive to the natural environment. Some are easier to find than others and can be placed in a bush or hidden in a fence pole. Others are more intricate and can involve rope pulling systems to bring the container down from a tree. On the app you can see a rough guide to where the geocaches are in your area. If you pay for an added subscription you have access to hints too. This was a lot of fun during the covid lockdowns during my undergraduate degree.

Usually, these containers hold a little log book for you to write your name and the date you found it. It always surprises me just how many people and how frequently people do find them.

Why not make it a competition between you and your family/friends…who can find the most? For more information, have a look at the geocaching website or try it for yourself by downloading the app!

I really do recommend giving this one a go!
